How does IPL work?
IPL treatment is an ideal therapy to address a variety of complexion concerns like rosacea, red and/or brown discolorations, or uneven skin tones. The IPL photofacial therapy treatment works to stimulate the deeper layers of the skin without damaging the skin’s surface or surrounding healthy skin and can ultimately lead to a more even skin tone.

IPL process under the skin
To target the areas of skin that have a red discoloration, the heat from the laser bypasses all other tissue and is absorbed by the blood. This focused heat coagulates the blood which is then flushed away by the lymphatic system. Melanocytes produce pigment (melanin) which create the brown or darker aspects of skin. For the sun damaged areas of the skin, or skin with brown discoloration, the laser heats up the melanocytes in the skin which then dry out or crust over. The dried-up melanocytes then rise to the surface of the skin, look like fine ground pepper, or brown speckles, and then shed naturally with the epidermis.

Questions & Support

What is IPL?

Men and women who struggle with the appearance of sun damage, vascular lesions, or dark spots on their skin might be ideal candidates for intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy at Crystal Skin Care. A photofacial with IPL is a skin rejuvenation treatment for hyperpigmentation problems on the neck and face. Master aesthetician Crystal Rigby utilizes the Harmony XL PRO laser from Alma to perform IPL treatments and produce great results for your skin. The handheld device emits intense pulses of light energy that stimulate the natural regeneration process and boost collagen production. As the added nutrients take effect, you should notice a healthier appearance, an improved tone, and fewer spots of discoloration.

Am I a candidate for IPL?

IPL works deep within the layers of your skin to treat a variety of complexion problems (particularly brown lesions and sun spots) with little or no recovery time needed. The best candidates for an IPL photofacial at Crystal Skin Care may have several issues with their complexion, such as sun damage, rosacea, hyperpigmentation (brown spots), rough texture, large pores, redness, freckles, melasma, age and sun spots, or dilated capillaries. Crystal and her team will examine your skin to see if you will benefit from IPL during your initial consultation and work with you to create a personalized IPL treatment plan.

How does IPL work?

IPL with the Harmony XL PRO takes about 20 – 30 minutes to perform in one of our private treatment rooms. Afterward, your skin will be extra sensitive to the sun so you should wear sunscreen or a hat as protection. Most patients notice minor side effects, such as temporary swelling, redness, blisters, or bruising. These symptoms should subside within a day or two. Some skin improvements can often be seen following one IPL therapy session, but optimal results are noticeable around one month after a full series of treatments is completed. It’s normal for you to get varying results after every session as you will likely experience a fading of redness, blotchiness, and sun damage over time.

What are the possible side effects of IPL?

Most women and men notice minor side effects, such as temporary swelling, redness, blisters, crusting, or bruising. However, these effects should go away in a few days. The treated areas will be sun-sensitive, and you should remember that excessive sun exposure can affect your results. We also recommend using sunscreen to protect your skin and help avoid skin damage, like redness and sun spots.

Do I need to prep for IPL?

Patients preparing to receive IPL therapy are usually asked to avoid self-tanners and sun exposure for at least 2-4 weeks before their procedure. You might need to discontinue the use of certain medications a few days before your treatment, and will likely need to avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications and blood thinners for 5-7 days before the treatment to help prevent bruising. Using sun protection (like a hat and sunscreen) would be best when outside since your skin will be extra sensitive.

Why should I get multiple IPL sessions?

Multiple IPL sessions usually produce natural-looking enhancements in the quality of your complexion. Each treatment will help to fade areas of hyperpigmentation and sun spots. A series of treatments also can deliver longer-lasting aesthetic improvements. *Individual results are not guaranteed and may vary from person to person. Images may contain models.
